In a bid to create a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous community, the Philippi Precinct Management Unit (PMU) was established in October 2019 by the Philippi Economic Development Initiative (Pedi) in collaboration with the City of Cape Town.
The PMU's vision is to transform the area bordered by Govan Mbeki, Stock, Sheffield, and New Eisleben roads into a healthy, prosperous community that is safe, clean, and attractive for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The PMU has outlined a clear mission to achieve its vision, which includes managing projects that visibly enhance the community's cleanliness and safety, assisting businesses in their interactions with the City of Cape Town, and fostering engagement with all stakeholders to build mutually beneficial relationships.
Safety and Security
One of the key activities of the PMU is to ensure the safety and security of the Philippi Precinct. To achieve this, they have deployed five security officers who patrol the area with two vehicles seven days a week during daytime hours. These officers also respond to emergencies. Additionally, the PMU is collaborating with various local agencies such as the Community Policing Forum and Neighbourhood Watch to enhance safety in the community.
Cleaning and Waste Removal
The PMU is also taking significant steps to address cleanliness and waste management issues in the precinct. They have deployed ten Waste Ambassadors who collect waste on the main roads and clean public spaces and common property areas. These ambassadors also conduct regular surveys of informal traders and residents as part of their Environmental Awareness Activation Campaign while educating and promoting responsible waste practices.
Access to City Services
To facilitate businesses' interactions with the City of Cape Town regarding urban management and utility services, the PMU aims to be the first point of contact for both formal and informal businesses. Furthermore, they seek to coordinate resource-sharing between the business sector and the City to combat crime and improve the overall condition of the precinct.
Stakeholder Engagement
The PMU is actively engaged in building relationships with all stakeholders in the Philippi Precinct. They share valuable information that benefits the entire community and represent the precinct at monthly SC13 and ACT meetings.
New Precinct Office Location
The PMU and Pedi office is located at Unit 14, 2nd floor, The Hub, Philippi Village. For any inquiries or to get in touch with the PMU, you can reach them at Tel. 021 371 9824 or via email at pmu@pedi.org.za.
The PMU also plans to keep the community informed through their regular newsletters, which will provide updates on their activities and positive events in Philippi East.
The establishment of the Philippi Precinct Management Unit is a promising development for the Philippi community, offering hope for a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous future. It represents a collaborative effort between local stakeholders and the City of Cape Town to bring about positive change in the area.
